Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor's Contributions

Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor is one of the persons who bring an honour to Malaysia as he is the first Malaysian astronaut. In addition, he has contributed to scientific and medical research about microbes in space, the characteristics and growth patterns of liver cancer and leukaemia cells, and the crystallization of various proteins. He makes this research when he was in aerospace.

Apart from that, he also gives a lot of motivational talks around the country, discussing about his experiences and studies in space. Generally, he gives talks to students especially to primary and secondary students as they will impress and interested in becoming an astronaut. Furthermore, he inspired many Malaysian to become like him who always wants to challenge himself.

"I'm not seeking fame or hope to be treated as a celebrity, but my efforts are to inspire Malaysians, especially school children, to be interested in science and the space industry."  —  Dr Muszaphar Shukor.

Dr SMS is giving his talks when he was in aerospace.
Besides, he also joined Mercy, which we called as an association that has been asked to help people who impacted by nature disasters. He active in charity work and he is also a volunteer in Afghanistan and Cambodia. Recently, he joined the Malaysian Mosques Youth Assembly on their mercy mission to Gaza. He hope to contribute his expertise as an orthopaedic surgeon to people at Gaza.

“I came here as an orthopaedic surgeon, not an astronaut. The time I spent in space made me realise how small the world is. I can’t just sit and watch things like this happen. I have to do my bit.” - Dr Sheikh Muszaphar

Living In Aerospace

Being microgravity in the space is a challenge to astronaut which makes the simplest daily routine was a hard task to Dr SMS himself. Such as for drinking fluids. As liquids split into little globules in the space, Dr SMS has to do right through a straw. If not, the floating liquids can damage the equipments.

Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor is showing fluid in outer space .

Furthermore, when comes to clean up, Dr SMS used wet wipes to clean himself. Besides, he also did the shampooing and brushing teeth but it was totally different with on Earth which is he just wipe out the suds instead of rinsing, and when he brush the teeth, he swallow instead of spitting out.

In addition, the most uncomfortable thing for Dr SMS himself is has to answer nature’s call. He needs to use a funnel with vacuum suction to ‘go’ in. Then the wastes are expelled into atmosphere where they blaze and disintegrate.

As there was a zero gravity, Dr SMS needs to tie his body to a sleeping bag when he was sleeping. This is because if he did not do that, he will floating freely around. Okay, let imagine how we can float while we are sleeping? Sounds funny right?

Dr SMS shows how he sleeps.

Aerospace completely different environment which is can change the people taste buds as well.

“Taste buds change. Although the food we had was regular food that was freeze-dried and vacuum-packed, (sometimes) what you like on Earth will not be the same in space. I love mashed potatoes, but I did not like the taste of it up there at all.” - Dr Sheikh Muszaphar

Then he and three other finalists were selected at the beginning of 2006 for the Malaysian Angkasawan spaceflight program. The program took place after Russia agreed to transport one Malaysian to the International Space Station or as known as ISS because part of a multi-billion purchase of 18 Russian Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighter jets by Malaysia. After finishing initial training at Star City in Russia, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Faiz Khaleed were selected to undergo an 18-month training program in Russia. Lucky man he is, at the end of the training, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar was chosen as the prime crew member, while Faiz Khaleed served as back-up. On September 17, together with the final medical tests and training examinations, it was announced that Dr Sheikh Muszaphar would be flying on the Soyuz TMA-11 mission.

His beloved parents are the person who have always been behind him and support his ambition to be an astronaut while his brothers are those who always believed in his ability and they always say 'yes' to any of his actions. His family is the greatest supporters and also his strength. So  basically, his family is his backbone.
